THE VINEYARD
The commune of Puisseguin, located in the Saint Emilionnais appellation area, is renowned for the production of excellent quality red wines. The terroir of this region is mainly made up of clay-limestone soil, which gives the wines a unique and distinctive character in an oceanic climate.
Located on a plateau in the heart of the village, Château Beauséjour benefits from an exceptional terroir, conducive to the production of great wines for aging. We cultivate forty hectares according to the principles of organic farming. Concerned about preserving the micro-organisms that make up our terroir and the health of consumers, we have never used weedkillers or synthetic chemicals, as evidenced by the poppies and silvestris tulips that bloom every spring in our vines. As our ancestors did, we only use Bordeaux mixture to protect our vines from diseases. Pioneers of organic farming in our appellation, we obtained certification by Ecocert in 1996.
In the desire to move towards agriculture that is more respectful of the environment and biodiversity, we started practicing biodynamics in 2016. To date, more than two thirds of the farm are certified in biodynamics by Demeter.
VARIETY
Our wines are made from three typical Bordeaux grape varieties:
- Merlot (70% of planted vines): with its fruity notes and silky texture, it is the dominant grape variety of the region
- Cabernet Franc (25%): with its spicy notes and firm tannins, it adds complexity to wines
- Cabernet Sauvignon (5%): with its blackcurrant notes and powerful tannins, it is used in small quantities to bring structure to the wines
For around fifteen years, Vignobles Dupuy have diversified by producing dry, fruity and elegant white wines and quality sparkling wine.
Three grape varieties are grown there:
- Muscadelle: to bring freshness as well as aromas of flowers and white-fleshed fruits
- Sémillon: to provide richness and texture to the wine, as well as aromas of honey, apricot and dried fruit
- Sauvignon blanc: to produce fresh and lively wines, with aromas of citrus fruits, exotic fruits and flowers
WINEMAKING
As soon as the harvest is received in the cellar, we carefully sort the harvest in order to keep only the healthiest and most ripe grains. Fermentations start naturally thanks to the indigenous yeasts present on the grapes. They take place in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats for a period of 2 to 3 weeks, with the wines exposed to temperatures below 30°C in order to preserve the fruit aromas and obtain well-balanced wines.
BREEDING
Once the fermentation is complete, we proceed with the blending, then the aging in barrels or vats of our different vintages.
For barrel aging, we only use French oak barrels from local cooperages. Our barrels are stored in the Château Beauséjour cellar, a location conducive to the production of great wines for aging thanks to its constant temperature and humidity. The wine is aged there for between 12 and 24 months depending on the vintages.
